I have been hearing whispers.
In defiance of everything you have ever heard about professional
athletes, I have heard some tales lately of this or that player who is
either a virgin, or is in some kind of revirginizing celibacy process.
Not the kind of thing you can get people to talk about much “on the
record” in my experience, but ESPN’s Chris Broussard did! Check out this passage of Broussard’s profile of Milwaukee’s Michael Redd:
A preacher’s kid and devout Christian, he’s known as a man of his word.
Who is going to question an NBA star who, because of his religious
beliefs, was celibate for three-and-a-half years before he tied the
knot in August 2006?Honeys knocked on his door at 2 a.m., followed him to his car after
games and left seductive messages on his phone, but through it all he
was faithful, to his Lord and to his future wife, Achea. His teammates
thought he was crazy.“You gay, man?” they asked. “Scared?”
Once they realized he was neither, they got behind his decision.
“We used to joke with Mike about it,” guard Mo Williams says. “But
we never doubted him because of how he carries himself. He’s so sincere
you can’t help but respect him 100 percent.”
I’m going to squint, and pretend I am not seeing the implied “amen
you’re not gay” there, and choose instead to kind of celebrate the fact
that there are always people out there ready to shatter stereotypes. I
applaud those people for speaking up.
Jordan Brand, a division of Nike Inc., on Tuesday launched the Jordan Melo M4, a shoe inspired by Team Jordan athlete and NBA player Carmelo Anthony.

The Jordan Melo M4 was designed to help Anthony improve his quickness and agility throughout the entire 2007-2008 basketball season. Additionally, the Jordan Melo M4 will be supported by an integrated marketing campaign including a national television ad starring the Denver Nugget player, set to launch on Thanksgiving Day. The new shoe will be sold beginning Dec. 1.
The Jordan Melo M4 has improved technology, reduced weight, increased ankle support and a unique compression sock which acts as another layer of support for the long basketball season.
The basketball kicks are set to release on December 1, 2007.
Bryant became the first player since 1964 to score 45 points or more in four consecutive games, joining Chamberlain and Baylor as the only players ever to do so. For the month of January, Bryant averaged 43.4 per game, the eighth highest single month scoring average in NBA history, and highest for any player other than Chamberlain. By the end of the season, Bryant had also set Lakers single-season franchise records for the most 40-point games (27) and most points scored (2,832), among others. Bryant won the league’s scoring title for the first time, posting a scoring average of 35.4. Bryant finished in fourth-place in the voting for the 2006 NBA Most Valuable Player Award, but also received 22 first place votes — second only to winner Steve Nash, and by far the highest number of first-place votes Bryant had ever received in his career.
