White Basketball Players

Bounce Magazine did something bold. They made their latest issue “The White Issue.”

It’s not some cute play on the Beatles “White Album.” It’s actually an issue of a streetball and playground-savvy magazine devoted to the notion of white people playing basketball. Pistol Pete, the Professor, and just about everyone who has ever been called “White Chocolate,” — they’re all in there.

Race simmers beneath the surface of a lot of basketball conversations. But at Bounce, they just pulled it up to the top.

Editor in Chief Jesse Washington writes in the intro:

… when we step on the court, we’re conditioned to think that black players are better than whites. It’s as if that rectangle is the last place in America where it’s OK to be racist.

These prejudices are are magnified where Bounce lives — the playgrounds, rec centers, YMCAs and driveways of the world, where we play for pride and the pure love of the game. In organized ball, coaches value many traits stereotypically associated with white ballplayers, and Europeans are impacting the game as never before. Any coach worth his whistle is too smart to fall for any racial okey-doke. But if it’s just me against you, on the concrete or dusty gym floor, my skills and heart and hunger against yours? The common perception is that’s a black man’s world right there.

Basketball Movie “Semi-Pro” Review

Streetball fanatic Will Ferrell stars as Jackie Moon, a has-been pop singer whose claim to passing fame hinges upon the hit song “Love Me Sexy.” The basketball movie takes place in the Time of Two leagues, the ABA and the NBA.  It’s the swinging big-hair early ’70’s, and Mr. Moon has given up musical performance  and taken on the responsibilities of ownership of a professional basketball team based in Flint, Michigan.

Will Ferrell is not only an owner, he also coaches , plays  and promotes, scheduling ten cent beer nights and having the players dress up in plastic fish and palm tree outfits. To drum up bigger attendance for one memorable home game, Jackie decides to wrestle a bear at center court.

Ferrell takes over the coaching duties, drawing up actual plays and getting the players in winning shape. Jackie schemes to draw in fans with even more outlandish promotions, which include staging a costumed musical, wrestling a bear and performing an Evel Knievel-style roller skate jump.

The movie simultaneously follows and skewers the conventions of sports comedy, just as it spoofs and pays homage to the ABA’s renegade style. The film benefits from its R rating, which allows Ferrell and gang to take their crazy sight and verbal stunts to the hilt.

“Semi-Pro”
also surprises with the laughs it gets off the court, especially for an outrageous Russian roulette sequence. Jackie Earle Haley, coming off an Oscar nomination for “Little Children,” has fun in a small role as a stoner bugging Jackie for unpaid prize money. Rob Corddry makes a hilarious impression as Monix’s superfan who happens to be living with the player’s ex-girlfriend.

Semi-Pro is now playing at a movie theater near you.  The hoops flick was released on February, 29th.
