USA Basketball National Anthem

Performed for the 1983 NBA All-Star Game, Marvin Gaye’s remix captured the passion of 80s soul, mixed it with some old fashioned patriotism and created a timeless classic.  And like Marvin and the Dream Team before them, this year’s Team USA Basketball intends to put on a show that will forever go down as one the greatest performances in the history of the sport.

Steve Nash Builds Community Center in Uganda

NBA star Steve Nash and the City of Victoria are teaming up to build a culture, art and sports and reconciliation center in northern Uganda.

The project, led by the Victoria-based Steve Nash Foundation, will help traumatized, impoverished youth, Nash said Sunday. Construction should begin next year.

“The youths of that community have experienced absolute horrors,” said Nash, the 2005 and 2006 MVP in the National Basketball Association, speaking outside a basketball camp in Victoria. “We want to create a centre to give these youths the opportunity we’re afforded.”

The centre will provide free basketball, soccer and other sports equipment, art materials, classes and counselling.

Kobe Bryant Beijing Olympic Games

Kobe Bryant has put aside the Lakers loss to Boston in the 2008 NBA Finals and re-ignited his passion for the sport he dominated this past season. He said he is looking forward to the competition and pressure the United States faces heading into the Beijing Olympics.

“What we have is a determination to win,” Bryant said after the first day of practice at Valley High. “We have guys who work extremely hard, play hard, play well together and go out there and do what we do best.”

“There is pressure every time we play, pressure to win, especially for us, USA Basketball,” Bryant said. “It comes with the territory. It comes from playing sports. Pressure comes along with it.

“But everyone is used to dealing with it. We thrive on it.”
