Ankle-breaker is a slang term used in the sport of basketball. It usually refers to a movement by an offensive player which happens so quickly that it is virtually impossible to apply an effective defense against it. Typically this involves the ball-handler changing direction so abruptly that the player guarding him becomes confused and makes an awkward and uncontrolled response (potentially breaking his ankle) before realizing where the other player has gone.

The best ankle-breakers to play the game are players such as NBA players Allen Iverson and Tim Hardaway and AND1 street-basketball professionals.

Also applies to football when the offensive player makes a move that causes the defender to change directions too quickly thus breaking his ankle.
