The Yates High School basketball team is the number 1 ranked team in the country. In a basketball world filled with behind the scenes deals, Yates basketball remains true to itself and the community. Have you ever seen the movie Jason’s Lyric? The movie was filmed in Houston’s 3rd Ward, the same location where the kids live that attend Yates High School. Over 89% of the students are on free or reduced lunches.
Yates has won 45 games in a row is looking for its second consecutive Texas High School Basketball 4A Championship. The school consists of 1,200 students – 88 Latinos, 7 Asians, 3 white people and the rest of the 1,102 students are African-American. I guess what I’m trying to say is, ballers and families don’t move to the 3rd Ward to play hoops. The team consists of players all within district lines and has been defeating some of the best basketball teams in the nation.
Yates is led by Joseph Young (Providence), Darius Gardner (Stephen F. Austin) and Brandon “Snap” Peters (Western Kentucky).
If you want a team to cheer for, Yates is your team on and off the court.
